Manik Sarkar

Manik Sarkar was born on January 22, 1949. He is a four-time Tripura Chief Minister, seven-term MLA, and incumbent Leader of the Opposition Manik Sarkar.

In his school years, Sarkar became involved in student activities. In 1968, at the age of 19, he joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist). At MBB College, where he earned a B. Com. degree, he spent his whole academic career as a candidate for the Students’ Federation of India.

Sarkar experienced his greatest triumph in 1998. He joined the CPI (M) Politburo, the main executive and policy-making body in a Communist party when he was 49 years old. He was appointed Chief Minister of the state of Tripura in the same year. Since then, he was elected as Chief Minister for the fourth time in a row in the 2013 assembly elections. From 2018 to 2023, he presided as the leader of the opposition in the Tripura Legislative Assembly.

He is the Chief Minister in Bharat with the fewest possessions, according to his affidavit for the 2018 Tripura Assembly election.
